Distinguished and Famous people from The Goulburn Valley

🌾 Sir John McEwen

John McEwen established a small soldier-settlement farm at Stanhope after the First World War. His early farming experience included dairying and involvement in the local cooperative factory, preceding a long Country Party career in federal politics. He briefly became prime minister after Harold Holt’s disappearance in December 1967, serving until January 1968. McEwen later retired to his Stanhope property. The Goulburn Valley connection runs through farming, cooperative enterprise and retirement, giving the national political figure a substantial local story beyond his short term in the country’s highest office.
